What the society discards as waste they use as a resource. However, their working and living environments are unhygienic at best and sub-human at worst and often life-threatening because they are exposed to dangers from hazardous waste. Some studies from Indochina and South Asia have shown that the average household income of waste-pickers is less than one US Dollar per day. In some cities of India, for example, average household income among waste pickers is as low as US$ 0.65 per day. With an average household size of five, this translates into a per capita income of US Dollars 0.13 per day, much less than the MGD Goal of US$ 1 per day.

FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - The European Central Bank, the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Swiss National Bank announced new measures Wednesday to enhance operations that provide U.S. dollar liquidity to European banks.
Under a key feature of the plan starting Aug 8, 'the ECB will conduct 84-day operations under the Term Auction Facility (TAF), while continuing to conduct operations with a maturity of 28 days,' an ECB statement said.
That meant U.S. dollars would be made available to European banks over a longer period than has been the case until now.
As a result of the international financial crisis, the Fed, ECB and Swiss National Bank agreed in December to currency swaps that allowed the ECB and SNB to provide dollars directly to European banks.
